The Recipe is probably the most famous dude in Hip Hop that you’ve never heard of. But ask anyone who is in the business, someone like Suge Knight, Brooke Wentz, or Jonathan Hey, and they will exactly know who The Recipe is.
The Recipe is quite simply one of the most respected underground producers in the entire Bay Area, and his Back Against The Wall Productions has, since its founding in 1991, produced numerous highly respected tracks and albums, including The Time Has Come (Easop, one of the country’s biggest gospel rap artists), Leanin (Mz Daizy), The Rangers (Sinister) and many many more.
Under The Recipe’s production wizardry, he has collaborated with Spice 1 (Jive Records), who has on his own garnered 14 gold and platinum records, along with Compton’s platinum recording artist M.C. Eiht (Kendrick Lamar, Menace II Society). Rappin 4-tay is another platinum recording artist and Recipe collaborative associate. Other artists include Mr. Mash (of Anaheim) of the Action Click, Destro & Slowe Burna, Black C of RBL Posse, OLIT (North Carolina), Fleetwood, Marvaless (Sacramento), So Vicious, The Tigg, Black Nate, Mac-Mo, Mike J, P-Town, Telly Mac (Tha Gamblaz), EL Plaga, Necolone, Bop, JayWrite, FleetWood, Skinz, Equipto (BoredStiff), Suga T (The Click), and Just Mannish as well as yproducers who have contributed music for his latest album, including Aspk, Dat Boi D, E Daddy, and JDizzl
The Recipe’s engineer is himself a Bay-area legend: TC, half of the legendary duo of TC & the Enhancer who produced and engineered the likes of Messy Marv, Dre Dog, JT the BIGGA FIGGA, Treach from Naughty by Nature, Totally Insane, Rappin’ 4-Tay, Big Mack, 11/5, and many, more.
There is much that is special and different about The Recipe. Lots of Hip Hop artists and producers may like food, but few, if any, successful Hip Hop artists/producers are also chefs. The Recipe is a certified chef (that’s what his name, The Recipe, refers to). In fact, he works at Acquerello, a San Francisco Michelin Award-winning, high-end Italian restaurant. He also holds degrees in Administration of Justice and Public Health as well as Culinary Arts.
The Recipe is also host of his own show on Cable Channel 29 in San Francisco. Called “Recipe TV, where hip hop meets food,” part of it has in-studio music guests and music videos, the other part has anyone who is associated with food preparation, including home chefs, restaurant owners, food trucks, and even dishwashers – they all are important to The Recipe because they are all important elements of what makes good food.
He also does a ton of volunteering for Glide Memorial Church, SF Adult Probation Department, and other causes and groups.
The Recipe grew up in San Francisco's Hayes Valley neighborhood, home to some of San Francisco's most infamous housing projects. In those streets, he honed his craft, working with neighborhood friends and fellow rap artists like Andre Nickatina, J.T. The Bigga Figga, and Messy Marv.
He started listening to rap back in the late ‘80s - Run DMC, Fat Boys, MC Shy D, Too Short, etc. He was fascinated from the very first time he heard them. He was hooked. Twenty years later, he is friends with some of the biggest names in Hip Hop, like, DMC (of Run DMC), and Dres (from Black Sheep), to name just a few. Initially, The Recipe built his reputation as an emcee, but he showed an early affinity for the studio and composition. His eventual move toward production was inevitable. As an artist he realized how expensive it was to come up with what producers were asking. So he chose to do it himself. In 1991, Back Against The Wall Productions was born, and gradually he was producing for a host of prominent as well as lesser known artists. Through his production company, The Recipe does everything from production to management to features, consultation, and distribution – whatever an artist needs to make it in the music business.
The Recipe is also an entertainer in his own right. Currently ranked #18 on Reverbnation, he has opened for D.J. Quick, Kid Ink, Dizzy Rascal, J Stalin. While his work has appeared in compilations on several artists’ albums, he has recently completed his own first full album.
He will also soon be completing another degree – in Audio Production – so that he’ll be able to offer the full package – emcee, producer and engineer.
