I play elafrolaika, rebetiko, nisiotika, and demotika. Be prepared to dance!
Eleni Papanou has a B.M. in jazz performance and just completed her master's in psychology. In addition to playing in club and lounge bands, she fronted her original band, Altrua. Eleni wanted to connect to her roots, and she teamed up with Giannis Kokkinogoulis, who started playing guitar and drums at 15 years old. After breaking all of his mother’s laundry baskets practicing his drum chops, she knew it was time to get him a set of drums. Gianni performed in Amsterdam, Holland, Belgium and landed on American soil in Chicago in 1977, where he played with notable Greek artists, such as Haris Alexiou, Litsa Diamadi, Dimitra Galani, and Manolis Angelopoulos, who addressed him as “Mikre.”
Giannis decided to return to live performance soon after Eleni asked him to coach her to sing in Greek. He agreed, but he didn’t take the request seriously, at first. Upon hearing her sing Aman Aman, Giannis recognized her talent. Wanting to help her progress even further, he suggested that she pick up the bass again, which ushered in the formation of Tiky Tiky Tak. Sadly, Gianni passed away 2021, and Eleni is continuing to bring the joy and beauty of Greek music to the public.
