Dr. Charlson Gaines empowers people live life to their greatest potential by teaching emotional intelligence in a way that is easy to understand and can be implemented immediately.
Charlson is an emotional intelligence expert, health psychologist, educator, and speaker. He empowers people to use emotional intelligence in a way that avails them of solutions to their innermost problems and self-made obstacles.
Charlson was focused on providing resilience skills and suicide prevention education to service members globally. The problem he encountered is that resilience is only one facet of positive psychology, and the training did not incorporate resilience into suicide prevention. Additionally, suicide is only one form of violence, and focusing on suicide does nothing to prevent intimate partner violence, gender-based sexual violence, and child abuse. Charlson discovered that the power to bridge the gap and integrate these ideas and concepts lay in emotional intelligence. Therefore, he chose to master this area as well, and being to teach emotional intelligence not as an abstract idea, but as a solution to interpersonal and self-directed violence.
Charlson has taken his message and teaching to many organizations globally. The events he’s presented at include the 26th Annual Institute of Violence, Abuse, and Trauma San Diego Summit, the 29th and 30th Annual Joint Safety and Environmental Professional Development Symposium hosted by the US Navy, the 17th Annual National Kidney Foundation – Florida Renal Professional Forum. He has also provided training to the National Air and Space Intelligence Center, When the Music Stops Suicide Prevention non-profit organization, the U.S. Air Force’s LeMay Center, and taught multiple workshops for members of the Chicago Teachers Union as a volunteer educator for the non-profit organization The Mental Health Association of greater Chicago. Charlson is also a board member for the Alpha Eta Phi Multiple Sclerosis Sorority.
Prior to these current endeavors, Charlson was a Violence Prevention Integrator for the U.S. Air Force’s 70th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing. It was in this position from 2019 to 2021 where he discovered that emotional intelligence is the bridge to close the gap between resilience training and suicide prevention.
Prior to that employ, he was a curriculum developer and instructor for the U.S. Air Force Headquarters Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office. He developed and taught the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator course. This course was tailored to the individuals designated at each installation to oversee the care and advocacy of victims of sexual assault. This included managing volunteer sexual assault victim advocates who were credentialed under the National Organization of Victim Assistance.
Charlson’s work before that was working as the training oversight manager for the U.S. Navy’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Headquarters office. He developed training for the Navy’s program, and oversaw efforts throughout the Navy to deliver the training effectively.
Charlson Gaines is a 20-year U.S. Air Force disabled veteran. In addition to his Ph.D. in Health Psychology, he has earned a Master’s Degree in Project Management, has been certified as a Trauma Professional, Department of Defense Master Resilience Trainer, and Cognitive Behavioral Life Coach.

When I present virtually, I use Zoom. I often use slides, but they are not necessary. I can present in person as well. All I need is an audience for which this material is relevant, and a sound system that is appropriate for the facility and crowd size. For smaller crowds and rooms (up to 50 people), I do not need a microphone. I bring my own laptop, so I do not need any computer equipment; however, if the setup has a computer already allocated for the event, I can use that too (or just not use slides). I am flexible on presentation logistics, and that will not impact the quality of the seminar.
My career is influenced by so many various leaders in many fields, including Drs. Brene Brown, Viktor Frankl, Martin Seligman, Laurie Santos, Barbara Fredrickson, Thomas Joiner, Daniel Goleman and Shawn Achor. Additionally, individuals outside the field of psychology who have influenced me include Gary Vaynerchuk, Jay Shetty, Les Brown, and Drs. Robert Sapolsky and Neil DeGrasse Tyson.
I integrate emotional intelligence, positive psychology and neuroscience. Continued study enables me to infuse multiple concepts into each presentation, including suicide prevention, resilience, mindfulness, guilt, shame, loneliness, misery and the mind-body connection. Not every seminar includes every subject. Seminars can be tailored to your specific event theme.
