Talks and speeches are tailored to the audience and the topic. Regardless of the event, the audience will receive an engaged, personable, authentic speaker willing to and share past experiences and ideas in order to develop an impactful connection. The goal is to leave the audience with a lasting memory and more informed than when they arrived.
Each talk is developed using three key ideas in order to influence the effectiveness of the talk.
1. Sequential. I understand the importance of properly structuring a speech. The first thing presented in a sequence is best remembered. Information presented toward the end of a talk is reasonably well remembered. While the middle of a talk is least well remembered. Therefore, the most important points must be delivered upfront.
2. Draw connections. Connections among elements in memory matter. I understand how to draw connections among the key points in order to increase the amount that people remember from my presentation.
3. Make the audience work. It requires effort to get information into explicit memory. Presentations are designed to make the audience think deeply about the points made which increases their memories after the presentation. Often times, there are opportunities for the audience to engage, summarize key points are ask questions.
