Bio: Mariya Pyter
Mariya Pyter is a Russian director, screenwriter and producer. She began her career in St. Petersburg, Russia. While still in Russia, she worked as a theater production manager and director (Open space Theater, Russia), journalist (TNT, NTV, Russia) and on film sets as a production assistant, associate producer and assistant director (LenFilm).
Inspired by the tradition of American cinema she moved to Los Angeles to continue her development as an artist. In 2016 Mariya completed a Directing program at UCLA Extension. Her latest film “The Dead are Silent,” is based on the novel by Arthur Schnitzler whose novel, “Rhapsody: A Dream Novel,” was the basis for Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut.” “The Dead are Silent” is a film-noir brought to life in collaboration with cinematographer Glen David Miller (“Titanic”, “Dogma”).
Mariya is an active member of Women in Film and part of the Artemis Women in Action film festival marketing team. She supports the empowerment of women in the film both in front and behind the camera.
She conducted a Directing Workshop at the Rough Cut film festival in Philadelphia this year.
In collaboration with cinematographer Bruce Finn (USC) Mariya Pyter directed Women In Film Public Service Announcement for the charity “A New Way of Life: Re-entry Project” featuring rap by Bre-Z (“Empire”). Mariya believes in importance of finding the solutions for issues connected to poverty, homelessness, liberty, AIDS and many more. That’s why Susan Burton’s (CNN hero 2010) charity “A new way of life: re-entry project” that helps women to make a successful community re-entrance after being in prison was one of the key projects of the year for her.
Currently, Mariya has three films (“Taste to be Wicked”, “The Dead are Silent” and “On the way to Lovetown”) in the festival circuit, one optioned script and a feature film “On the way to Lovetown” in development based on her short film with the same title.
