Diana Hooverman - A Music Biography
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Diana Hooverman was born in 1956 in Akron, Ohio, into a family with a deep love for music. Growing up, Diana was surrounded by the sounds of sing-alongs and impromptu performances at family gatherings, with her grandmother leading many evenings around the piano. This early exposure to music left a lasting imprint on her, sparking a passion that would stay with her throughout her life.
At the age of 12, Diana began formal clarinet lessons, yet her musical curiosity extended far beyond that. She was self-taught on the piano, honing her skills by ear and developing an innate ability to play. As she got older, she expanded her musical repertoire, adding guitar to her list of instruments. Her interest in guitar came naturally, as friends who visited the winery she and her husband owned, Three Oaks Vineyard, would often play. Diana was soon playing alongside them, strumming acoustic guitar in the winery’s cozy, relaxed atmosphere.
From Open Mics to a Music Career
Diana's musical journey took a significant step forward as she began performing at open mic events in nearby towns, including Granville, Blacklick, Newark, and Coshocton. It was at these local gatherings that Diana began to refine her performance skills, blending the rock and folk styles she loved from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Her love for acoustic guitar music, shaped by the sounds of her youth, became a defining aspect of her performances.
In time, Diana and her husband decided to open up their own weekly open mic event at Three Oaks Vineyard, offering a welcoming space for other local musicians to share their music. This event became a central part of their winery’s offerings, allowing Diana to continue developing her craft while fostering a community of musicians and music lovers.
Musical Style and Evolution
Diana’s music is a heartfelt reflection of the rock and folk genres from the 1960s through the 1980s. Drawing inspiration from classic artists of those decades, Diana’s acoustic guitar performances feature warm, soulful tones that evoke a sense of nostalgia.
In addition to her acoustic guitar work, Diana plays electric guitar and mandolin, each adding depth and texture to her musical offerings. Her constant pursuit of musical growth is evident in her commitment to learning new instruments. Currently, Diana is expanding her musical versatility by learning the fiddle, further enriching her sound and widening her musical horizon.
A Life in Music: The Winery, Open Mics, and Retirement Communities
Three Oaks Vineyard, the winery Diana and her husband own, has become more than just a business; it is a reflection of their love for both music and community. The weekly open mic sessions they host have grown in popularity, attracting both seasoned musicians and aspiring artists eager to perform. For Diana, these open mics are not only an opportunity to share her own music but also a way to connect with others who share her passion.
In addition to performing at her winery and local open mics, Diana has also brought her music to retirement communities. She plays mandolin and accompanies a friend who sings and plays guitar. Their performances at these venues are beloved by residents, many of whom find comfort in hearing songs that connect them to memories of their own past.
Through the years, Diana has become a beloved fixture in the local music scene, known for her warm, welcoming personality and her soulful acoustic performances. Whether performing solo or jamming with friends, Diana's music continues to evolve, always staying true to her roots while embracing new musical possibilities.
