Ask any person who has had a musical experience with Yaw Osei-Owusu and they are likely to say one word—gifted. Yaw Osei-Owusu, whose parents have roots in Ghana, West Africa, is a man devoted and passionate about his craft, and is quickly becoming one of the most recognized names in contemporary African Christian music.
Yaw first found his love for music at an early age during his upbringing in Northern Virginia where he joined his local church choir, and eventually became a Minister of Music and youth leader. While in ministry at The Church of Pentecost, a church with a worldwide membership of over 2.5 million people across the world, Yaw honed his gift and laid a foundation that would later catapult his career.
Defying the odds and startling statistics about the perceived apathy in today’s youth, Yaw continued his work in music and ministry while pursuing his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. There, he is well-known for his role in founding the annual True Worshippers concert. To date, the concert has become an annual gospel event and has grown with concerts being held in Maryland, New York and Texas.
In 2011, Yaw released his first gospel mix tape titled The Audio-Biography of a Worshipper Chapter 1: My Passion which featured the original single and music video “High on High.” The release of the single was met with much acclaim, and the video received over 15,000 hits by its second week on YouTube.
Following the success of The Audio-Biography of a Worshipper Chapter 1: My Passion, Yaw ended 2012 with a largely successful Live DVD recording of his most recent album, My Reasonable Act. The recording was attended by a crowd of over 600 people and featured backing vocals from Levitical worship, a powerhouse choir based in the DC area, and music direction by Stellar award nominee Terrell Hunt. To date, My Reasonable Act continues to make waves in the community featuring the inspirational singles “High on High” and “Wrapped in One” which are available on all major online retail outlets.
A man with humble beginnings, Yaw continues to make admirable strides in music. Among his growing list of accomplishments is the 2012 “Artist of the Year” (USA/Canada) award at the African Gospel Music Awards. However, his most important accomplishment is being able to use his ministry and work to encourage and inspire others.
