Michael McMeel / Inner City Slickers
The Awareness Foundation (TAF) / Inner City Slickers, is a California Nonprofit Corporation 501(c)(3) that was founded over 20 years ago by Michael McMeel, former drummer with the 70’s rock group, Three Dog Night.
Michael McMeel’s musical career started in Denver Colorado as the drummer of a local band that toured throughout 4 states. After moving to Hollywood, California in the early seventies McMeel formed a studio band with the players of Rufus and Chaka Kahn. At that time, McMeel also recorded with, Carl Carlton, Freda Payne, Sam Parson and Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids, to name a few. In 1973, McMeel got a break and joined 70’s mega-band, Three Dog Night and for the next three years he toured world wide and recorded two albums with them, “American Pastime” and “Coming Down your Way”.
After leaving Three Dog Night, McMeel embarked on a acting career and starred in The Krofft Super Show with “Kaptain Kool and the Kongs” for ABC, the Donny and Marie Show, the Brady Bunch hour, and he appeared in countless other television shows and films. He also has directed and produced a number of commercials, plays and corporate videos in Los Angeles.
Now McMeel has put together a group of very talented musicians that take the music of Three Dog Night to a whole new level - 3DC. All the songs that McMeel performed back in the early 70's has a whole new presentation but keeping the vibe that we all love when it comes to Three Dog Night.
In addition to his dedication to music, Michael McMeel is a man who has committed a significant part of his adult life to developing and implementing principal-based programs for the benefit of the at-risk youth in our communities. In 1992, Michael formed The Awareness Foundation / Inner City Slickers, a non-profit charity that works with ”at-risk” children. Inner City Slickers is one of the many programs that helps create character, integrity and self-esteem in our youth by combining the magic of horses with Cowboy Ethics.
Michael is truly an authentic individual who is both dedicated and passionate about the ICS program and making a difference in the lives of children, something he’s been committed to doing since the inception of this program in the early 90′s. After over two decades of service operations, Michael has not received any compensation for his efforts; instead the payoff has been the hope of a better future for our kids and a better society for us all.
Inner City Slickers now has multiple ICS locations throughout the United States and Michael’s vision and focus are on developing additional ICS locations in the United States and abroad. A large part of the ICS program is keeping in contact with the children & youth after they have participated in the program and Michael is also developing new & innovative methods of connecting and staying in touch with these children & youth. His heart knows no boundaries and his insights and dedication are inspiring to the kids and to the adults as well!
