I have devoted much of my life to sports. For since the age of 3, it has practically been sports year around. No matter what time of year it was I was involved in one sport or another, or two for that matter. This has led me to excel my skills in teamwork and seeing how other people, including myself, respond to information given to them and how they take criticism, as well. These chances of being a leader, team player, and taking feedback from how people respond, and prefer, to information being given to them has had a massive impact on my public speaking awareness.
In both high school and college, which I am currently in my last year of (majoring in Business Administration), I have had many chances to speak in front of classes, students and teachers for presentations and other assignments. I also had the pleasure of taking a public speaking class during my senior year of high school that counted towards college credit. I reference to my high school and college years because they also have shaped how I present myself as a speaker. Throughout these times of presenting, I have been humbled to receive positive feedback from teachers, professors, and other students.
During these schooling years of mine, I've also had the luxury of pitching to investor for startup business ideas. I was a part of program my senior year of high school that allowed me to speak with entrepreneurs and high-level business people, helping me improve my speaking and sentence articulation. But during this program, our class had a major project that resulted many students, including myself to pitch to investors for our class project, which resulted in a total of $70k plus in raised funds. At the end of my time in the program, I was also tasked with creating, growing and pitching my own personal business. This was concluded at a live shark event the program hosted, where I had the opportunity to be on stage and pitch my business to "sharks".
I have had the privilege to lead multiple different Bible study groups within the last year, which has aided greatly in developing my public speaking and leadership skills, along with helping me overcome any fear I once had towards speaking in front of others.
Throughout my life, I had to deal with many challenges that tested who I was as a person. I dealt with doubt, guilt, shame, depression, anxiousness, and I felt like a victim. As if, someone else in the world caused what I was going through to happen and what they did led me to behave the way I did. How ignorant that was! To blame someone else or a group of people for how I behaved or how I felt was completely ridiculous of me. We cannot give our soul away to someone or something else. We can give in to desire that cause our soul to ache and feel as if we gave it away, but we can't "sell our souls". God has paid for our souls through His Son, thus we are always and forever will be His. This is what I have come to learn in the last few years, and from learning this, I have been able to conquer all challenges and addictions that have plagued my life. And this is the message I wish to share with others. How they too can break free from the chains that built, through sin, in their life.
For my speaking engagements, I require a clear stage or platform with adequate space for movement, as I like to engage with the audience visually and directly. While a podium is optional, it can be helpful depending on the setting. Good lighting is important, with a spotlight to ensure visibility during the presentation and soft ambient lighting to create a welcoming atmosphere. For sound, a wireless lapel or headset microphone works best to allow freedom of movement, and a sound system capable of reaching all audience members clearly is essential. If multimedia elements are needed, a projector or screen setup would be beneficial, but I can adapt to any setup based on the event's needs.
