"Covered In Earl" Brint Anderson's latest recording and bio
When it comes to Earl King, Brint Anderson is a true disciple. Besides the fact that he has worked with bassist George Porter Jr. (another of Earl's true disciples) for over two decades in Porter's band the Running Partners, he has played, studied, and worked Earl's songs from the inside and the out. Earl King's music is perhaps more quintessentially New Orleans than anyone outside Fats Domino and Huey Piano Smith. It is streetwise and poetic, deep and funky, full of soul and whimsy. King was a trickster and Rosicrucian, a kind-hearted giving individual and a street level philosopher. The legends of Earl King are legion from his going out on the road as Guitar Slim to illustrating a Dew Drop Inn newspaper to late night excursions to feed the elephants in the Audubon Zoo. Everyone knows his anthems Come On and Big Chief, and Anderson here does excellent interpretations of those that rock out with a Crescent City good time feel, but it's his work on the lesser known tunes that stand out. Hard River To Cross is a lament that Anderson sings with barely controlled emotion, and his sly takes on Rough Spots and The Real McCoy reveal nuances and humor. Somehow he replicates King's phrasing and pluck-and-stab guitar tone while still making the music his own. And by putting it out into the world, Anderson is both indulging his understandable love for King's music, but also making sure that another generation of listeners fully appreciates how great a song Trick Bag or Make A Better World is. In this year of 2015, there is a debate of what New Orleans is and who is a New Orleanian. We can all look to Earl King's music and Anderson's versions of it as both serious and hilarious guidelines (The Trickster embodies many contradictions). Whether we know it or not, by living in New Orleans, we are truly Covered In Earl. As Earl wrote and Anderson sings with glee, “You might see a king and you might see a queen, but there ain't no city like New Orleans.” - David Kunian (documentarian, WWOZ Kitchen Sink DJ, and musicologist).
