Wow! A bit of context: I am a librarian with San Leandro Public Library and to honor Caribbean Heritage Month this June 2023, we had hired David Byrd and Byrds of a Feather to come and play out our Main Library this week.
To be honest, we really were just wanting to have fun with the concert, but upon my preparation and meeting with David, we both decided that to truly honor the culture of the Caribbean nations, and since we are a library and community center, we planned to offer a bit of cultural teachings behind the playing. David was really receptive, and he was so helpful in our request because he actually offered tidbits of Jamaican culture, and the values behind Reggae.
My one coworker and I were trying to handle the all ages group in this outdoor plaza in front of our library. We didn't have to worry at all, because David and his band were so professional and inviting towards the group. Not only was it a very family friendly one hour set of Jazz Reggae, but he spoke to the crowd about peace, unity, and the beauty of diversity in between songs. Just what our mixed up world needs right now.
This band's Jazz Reggae was such a hit with our community, who found it fun and delightfully surprising to have a live band outside the library! Even people from across the street in the apartment complexes were interested and came across to see what was happening after hearing the band jamming outside. Some people came very ready with their lawn chairs. Music truly does bring all together.
Maybe the only downside was the grey June Gloom weather, but sure enough, David and company infused a lot of their warmth and brightness into the crowd, and truly delivered at our library's night concert.
A very fun, engaging, and professional band-David Byrd and Byrds of a Feather were such a hit with our community, and we highly recommend this funky, soulful band. A huge shout out to Carlos Caminos on guitar, Toho Saunders on bass, Michael Spencer on drums, Eli Goldlink on keyboards, and David Byrd on alto sax and vocals. We are even recommending them to our Community Development contact for our Wednesday Farmers Market.
