I am a singer-songwriter and worship leader residing in Tennessee with my wife and 5 kids. I'm originally from Duluth, Minnesota. Over the past several years, I've had the opportunity to record various projects and my music is primarily acoustic-based. My set-lists are a mixture of worship songs, hymns, and originals. I've played festivals, churches, and venues all over the United States with a focus of leading people to the feet of Jesus in worship. Part of what I love is connecting to the audience both on and off the stage, knowing ministry takes place in simple conversations.

A Derek Charles Johnson event can be tailored to meet your needs. I have done many events as a solo artist...just guitar and vocals. This is the easiest and requires the least set up and planning. I'm also willing to bring other musicians along and have a full band if that is preferable. Concerts I've done in the past have included a mixture of worship songs, hymns, and original music. If there are certain songs that you want me to include, I am flexible and want to meet the goals and expectations you are looking for.
First and foremost, Derek Charles Johnson is a follower of Christ. The other “hats” he wears in ministry derive their purpose and meaning from his main identity in Jesus. Musically, he is a songwriter, worship-leader, and recording artist. Songs are melded with his passion for writing, blogging, and podcasting which take shape in his AS BOLD AS LIONS ministry.
Derek’s discography includes songs written from a worship leader’s heart. His albums include “Carry On,” released in 2014 (producer Tommee Profitt) and “Seeing For The First Time,” released in 2020 (producer Jay Speight). He is excited to release new music in the summer of 2022. These new songs are stripped-down acoustic arrangements of beloved hymns beginning with his single “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” (released June 1, 2022). His Hymns Vol. 1 project will be available in June 2022 and will be a foretaste of things to come: the 5 song EP is the first of many upcoming hymn and worship projects Derek hopes to release. Derek’s take on these projects: “Through it all the main objective is to be able to sit and listen to these songs and just worship. To feel like you are in the room with the guitar, the lyrics, and the Lord. These songs are sparse arrangements and that is on purpose. Everything else aside, I want the listener to be drawn into a place of praise and adoration of Jesus Christ.”
Between the music side of things and the AS BOLD AS LIONS side, Derek takes very seriously the opportunity and platform he has been given: to share the love of Jesus. He has been able to share from various stages whether it be a church, a festival, a coffeehouse, even a city park or a baseball field (true story!). God has been faithful. Smith...Gospel albums by Johnny Cash and Alan Jackson have had a big impact on hymns projects I've done.
