While in college, Garry was told, by a speech professional, that no one like him had any business trying to teach school. Garry set out to prove this “learned individual” wrong. He not only graduated from college with a teaching degree, but was once nominated from the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Social Studies. Appalachian State University 1973, B.S History/Teacher Cert.; Virginia Tech 1977, MA in Education; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 1986, MSA Certification in Ed. Adm; 1988, Ed.S. Certification in Ed. Adm. He is the recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award (North Carolina’s Highest Citizens Award) and was recognized by the Governor of North Carolina as a Special Volunteer Award Winner.
