15 minutes with Kate and the Howlers…..
1. When did you form the band? Was it one person at a time or have you all been friends and decided to perform together? When did you first start performing in public? Where?
January 2014- we were playing in Mason Music’s Rock Band League. We boys had originally played together in the band “un-grate-ful” the previous Fall then Kate got placed with us. We were starting to jell but when Kate joined we knew we had found the singer. First gig together was at “Blackwell’s Pub” in Cahaba Heights. We performed “Demons”. It sounded good…stuck together and started doing gigs on our own.
2. What has been a couple of your favorite performances? Why?
Will Hurley- Boutwell auditorium in Birmingham because so many famous people played there and FloraBama at the Beach and the DEKE house, a fraternity at Alabama
Will McCowan-Exceptional Foundation- Chili cook-off – Huge crowds and lots of chili. Saturn’s Radio Free Birmingham- I feel like it was the best sounding gig.
Paul McMinn-Chili cook- off is always great because it is for such a good cause
Kamp McMinn-Definitely the Deke House and Chili- so many fun things going on…
Kate Howell-I really enjoyed playing the Flora Bama since it was on the beach.
3. Have you won any contests, or received any awards for your singing?
Will McCowan- We got second place in Jam for Sam battle of the bands. We won a couple times at Mason for 13U. We also won our schools best band in ArtForms.
Kate Howell- We won our schools talent show, art forms, and placed 2nd in a battle of the bands against high schoolers. We may have won more things that I am forgetting.
4. Tell me about your original song, Acrophobia. Did you write it? Where did the idea come from?
Will Hurley- We all sort of wrote it…with the help from Coach Ellis. It came from us all writing our ideas on paper.
Will McCowan- we wrote it with a little help from some people at Workplay
Paul McMinn- it is co-written with help from others and brainstorming
Kamp McMinn- I came up with my part but all together half us and half Workplay
Kate Howell- we co-wrote it with people at Workplay. They asked us about ourselves and used the information we gave them to come up with the foundation of the song. We built it from there.
5. Who is your favorite artist to cover? Why?
Will Hurley- Head and the Heart - It’s fast and hard to play.
Will McCowan-Head and the Heart. We sound a lot like them and we play their music.
Paul McMinn- I don’t have a favorite, but our twist makes any music fun
Kamp McMinn- Red Hot Chili Peppers…really well grooved songs…we don’t cover them. Favorite artist…
Kate Howell- I don’t have a favorite artist, but my favorite song is “Valerie” by Amy Wine house because it has a really good feel to it.
6. What is it about performing you like so much?
Will Hurley- Entertaining people and hanging with my friends.
Will McCowan-Playing music for a large crowd of people and being with my friends on stage.
Paul McMinn- the compliments and having a good time with my friends.
Kamp McMinn- the excitement of putting on a show for friends and others
Kate Howell- I love to see the crowd’s reaction when they see we are just 12, 13 and 14 years old.
7. What exciting things do you have coming up?
Will Hurley- Our trip to New Orleans to play on the streets.
Will McCowan-We are going to New Orleans to play on the streets
Paul McMinn- well we have a lot of gigs coming up and we are working on another original
Kamp McMinn- The Kappa Delta House
Kate Howell- The whole band is going to New Orleans at the end of May and are going to be playing the streets which im super excited about. We are also writing more music.
8. What is your dream?
Will Hurley- To get Famous!!!
Will McCowan- To be a famous band…
Paul McMinn- to play the rest of my life
Kamp McMinn- to come out and at least be a part of one hit song.
Kate Howell- My dream would be to become a singer who gets to travel a lot. I want to see the world while making music.
