Earth, Wind and Fire Tribute
Vocal: Joey Diggs, Luisa Dunn (Larry Dunn’s wife), Lana Turner, Saxophone: Michael Parlett, Trumpet: Winston Byrd, Trombone: Steve Baxter, Keyboard: Larry Dunn (arranged music for Ramsey Lewis) (original member Earth Wind and Fire), Guitar: Sheldon Reynolds (original member Earth Wind and Fire), Guitar: George Jorge Evans, Bass: Hilliard Wilson (nickname: Mud Ball) Drums: Tony Moore.
Lana was a superstar on, “Can’t Find a Reason.” She belted it out and the crowd adored her. Larry said. “Come on, Michael, check on it.” Michael did an alto solo with one foot on the rail and dished out one hell of a number! Larry commented. “So beautiful, don’t you agree?” Lana added. “You don’t mind if I take my time, do you?” Michael and Lana created a lovely duet together, with perfectly timed volleys. Larry added. “Alright now, don’t start nothin’.” Joey chimed in. “Do you remember when they used to say it like this? Larry Dunn used to say it like this.” All three joined in on vocals. Larry commented. “Good Lord, the lovely and extremely talented, Miss Lana Turner. If you can go home and practice on that one! This is another one. You should feel free to stand up on!”

Larry Dunn Revisits the Music of Earth Wind & Fire in Special Club Concert
Among the highlights of the two dynamic sets was Dunn’s impassioned solo introduction (which included intergalactic messages from his signature mini moog synthesizer as well as the kalimba – the African thumb piano that harnesses the very essence of Earth Wind & Fire), a disco-jazz version of “Can’t Hide Love” played with a flintier rhythm, a slammin’, first set-closing rendition of the ever-uplifting “Shining Star” that segued into a jam on Sly & The Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” a sizzling version of “Getaway” that included the thrilling, scene-setting introduction that was inexplicably left off of the original Lp, and a warm visit to “That’s the Way of the World,” EWF’s own National Anthem.
The vocalists all did a wonderful job of delivering these well-known numbers, particularly Lana Turner whose Sarah-Vaughan-goes-to-church approach nailed ALL of the crescendos and peaks of Philip Bailey’s classic runs on “Reasons,” groom to be Sheldon Reynolds perfectly mirroring Maurice White on “Be Ever Wonderful,” and Joey Diggs who soared on “Fantasy.” Luisa Dunn – the lovely wife of Larry Dunn – was not featured singing lead, but she contributed spot-on harmony, and the most ebullient and infectious energy of all to the stage.
