Beginning piano lessons at the age of six with private instructor, Rebekah Branham, she learned more styles of music than she ever dreamed including Classical, Christian Contemporary, Pop and Jazz. A native of Dallas, she continued her study of music at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas where she was exposed to musicians from all over the world. It was during these years that Miriam found herself playing in Afro-Cuban and Jazz Fusion bands, accompanying jazz singers, performing in classical recitals and loving every minute of it. While in high school, the shy Miriam slowly began to sing, studying vocalists such as Shirley Horn, Sarah Vaughan and Nancy Wilson. By her senior year of high school she had studied with a myriad of teachers and was introduced to jazz multi-instrumentalist, Roger Boykin, who mentored her.
Impressed with Miriam’s foundation of jazz, Boykin invited her to join his group at venues such as the Dallas Museum of Art, the South Dallas Cultural Center, Brooklyn Jazz Caféand Sammons Center for the Arts. Through studying with Boykin, Miriam realized the advantage of playing more than a single instrument and took an interest in the electric bass and guitar.
During Miriam’s college years she developed an interest in song writing with influences like Carole King, Diana Krall and Norah Jones. In addition to performing secular music, Miriam enjoys leading worship music and has led worship at 1042 Church in Frisco, United Methodist Women’s National Convention in Nashville and Kings Parish Presbyterian Church. She has taught for Camp Jam and Power Chord Academy as well as non-profit organizations such as Big Thought, Junior Players and Arts Net.
Miriam is the owner of a private teaching studio, Music with Miriam and performs for private events. Miriam also serves as a Creative Director for the Boys and Girls Club Center for New Generation at Dunbar Elementary in South Dallas. She is an alumnus from the University of Texas at Arlington where she received her Bachelors degree in Music Media with a minor in Business Administration. She also holds a Masters Degree in Biblical and Theological Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary and is currently working towards a Masters Degree of Media Arts and Worship.
