Tony Jefferson is an exceptional guitarist who has played all the cool
Jazz joints in Detroit – Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, Cliff Bell’s, Bert’s,
and Aretha’s Jazz Café. He has opened for Cameo and The Ohio
Players and has performed at major events like The Woodward
Dream Cruise and Arts Beats & Eats. Tony’s cozy, Jazzy notes and
expert finger work mesmerize audiences whether he performs solo,
as a duo or with his entire 6-piece band.
Tony’s Music career began ironically at age 7 when his
mom got him a Texaco electric guitar for Christmas. He
was very upset because he wanted cool toys but his
mother had much higher expectations for him.
Not long after, he passed by a neighbor’s house where the
a guitarist fnamed Stanley from “The Trouble Band” was
playing and he was intrigued. He went home, brought his
own guitar and Stanley took an interest in him and offered
to teach him.
After some months of training, Tony got really good and
began playing at his church. Soon after, another church
saw his talent and hired him.
At age 13, Tony formed his first group called “The Danger
Band” and began playing covers of song by Jimi Hendrix,
The Ohio Players, and Classic Rock and Funk Bands.
During his teens and 20s, Tony played mostly at banquet halls and local events. Then at
age 30, Tony formed a group called “Last Call.” Then at age 37 Tony formed his current
band that played R&B, Funk, Rock, Pop, and Jazz.
In the decades ahead, Tony’s band performed at popular venues like Baker’s Keyboard
Lounge, Bert’s Place, Aretha’s Jazz Café, Duo’s, Gina’s Jazz & Soul, Club Network,
Andiamo, The Sand Bar, The Detroit Princess Cruise Ship, and at festivals like Arts
Beats & Eats, The Dream Cruise, Winterblast, and The Ribs and R&B Music Festival.
In 2019, “New Strategy” opened for national entities like Cameo, The Ohio Players , Peter
White, and Tim Bowman. Then in 2022, Tony traveled to Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee,
Iowa, and Alabama as a guitarist for former Four Tops singer, Ronnie McNair.
Tony has released 2 CDs and recorded 20 songs. He is proficient at guitar, keyboards
and drums and sees himself mostly as a Straight Up Jazz artist. He particularly loves
Jazz because provides more intimacy with the audience and allows him to “talk” to them
through the distinct notes that he plays on his guitar. For him, it’s a “conversation.”
Tony’s latest masterpiece is a single called “Latin Afro” which is an eclectic blend of
Jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms. It is Magical.
