Ruby Dee and the Snakehandlers are a high octane Americana Roots and Rockabilly four-piece that plays twang the way it was meant to be heard- with attitude! Their music encompasses Texas honky-tonk, Bakersfield twang, Memphis rockabilly, Western swing and good old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll.

Ruby Dee & the Snakehandlers offer up a huge serving of twang with an attitude a la Wanda Jackson, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, the Stray Cats, X and so many more. Our original tunes will have you crying in your beer or shaking in your boots, maybe both at the same time! Either way, folks have a great time at our shows- you can't help but get up and dance your tail feathers to the ramblin' good Snakehandler rhythm...
The band is fronted by vocalist/songwriter Ruby Dee and Jorge Harada on guitar with support by the irrepressible Dylan Cavaliere on doghouse bass and rockin' Scott French on cathouse drums.
Ruby grew up exploring the no-longer-wild foothills of Northern California and driving the long straight roads around Big Spring, Texas; that life provides inspiration for her singing and songwriting for The Snakehandlers. So does her time escaping to South America, driving a truck, working Alaskan fishing boats, and settling down in Seattle for some years before heading back to Texas where she belongs. Jorge Harada has created a stir in the rockabilly world for many years, playing his Gretsch guitar in such bands as the Ugly Americans and rockabilly giants DRAGSTRIP 77.
Known for its high-energy shows, the band has made a name for itself as a group that delivers and performs to capacity crowds in local clubs, festivals and events, including Folklife, Bumbershoot, Viva Las Vegas, France's Good Rockin' Tonight Festival, Spain's Screamin' Weekender, and more. The band was voted Best Unsigned Band in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer People's Picks 2005, Best Signed Band in 2006, and Ruby's singing and songwriting has garnered her such awards as First Runner Up in Songwriter Magazine's 2007 Best Song Competition and 2008 LAMA Best Americana Vocalist.
The band's fourth CD, 'Miles From Home' came out in June 2008 and charted on the Americana Music Association Top 100, as well as Texas' Far Third Coast Music Top 40. Singles from this CD are still earning accolades and airplay around the world. Their next CD, 'Live From Austin TX', earned the band a well-deserved Grammy-consideration for Best Americana Album in 2011, and their most recent CD 'Rockabilly Playground', released in 2013, hit the Far charts at #15 and earned the band a 2nd Grammy consideration for Best Children's Album. Stay tuned for more...
"Ruby Dee and the Snakehandlers make a sweet honky-tonk country racket that's perfect for long road trips, lazy afternoons and jumpin' and jivin' at the corner bar," said (link hidden) "If you like Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens, X or any combination thereof, you'll immediately recognize the band as kindred souls. If you don't like those great artists, guess what? You may end up dancing to The Snakehandlers anyway, despite yourself. The band's that good".
“Risky — and perhaps just a bit risqué — Ruby Dee and The Snakehandlers conjure forth all sorts of visions of another time,” said Metro Santa Cruz after a California show. “Rooted firmly in the classic country and rockabilly tradition, the band is an authentic backdrop for lead singer Ruby Dee’s blend of Wanda Jackson sass and Patsy Cline pathos. The band holds it down with the insistence of a chugging train while Dee, a pinup heartbreaker of yesteryear with thoroughly modern attitude, commands the stage.”
