Jake has been into music since he was a young kid. His parents played loud music throughout the house consisting of old school R&B to Rock and Roll. Jake picked up the trumpet at age 9 and joined concert and jazz band at that young age. Once he saw his brother playing guitar he decided he wanted to play too. Heavily influenced by Dave Matthews Band, the first song he ever played on guitar was #34.
Jake has always had a taste for metaphorical lyrics with syncopated rhythms and odd time signatures. He began writing his own music to fit that style when he was 15. By 19, Jake had a repertoire of over 40 original tunes. He knew he wanted to play out, but he wanted the band to be formed of musicians that were better than him at his own craft. In 2011 he set out to put together a band that would meet that standard. Stray Suns was formed and although the lineup has changed and some of the music has too, the overall feel and dynamic has stayed the same. He and the band focus on writing music to move people, whatever that may mean.
