The Divine Messengers, was founded and organized in October 1991 by Kevin L. Wheeler of Washington, DC. One month
after the initial group was formed, Mr. Wheeler asked Albert Phillips to join as lead vocalist. Larry Haggins joined the
group shortly thereafter providing background vocals, along with Gary Spencer (1st tenor), Tyrone Lovell (2nd tenor),
Kevin L. Wheeler (baritone), and Larry Simpson (bass). The band members were as follows: Keith Exum (organ), Tony
Blair (keyboard), Perry Ashton (bass guitar), Adrian Chambers (drums), and Tyrone Lovell (lead guitar). The Divine
Messengers was created.
Kevin L. Wheeler, established the group`s name patent with the US Patent and Trademark office in 1996. He engaged legal
representation in 1997 and incorporated the group. January of 1995 The Divine Messengers recorded their first album with
Redemption Records entitled “Victory.” Redemption Records distributed the “Victory” album within the United States,
and The Divine Messengers began to travel throughout the U.S. performing in churches, auditoriums, banquet halls, schools,
charity functions, as well as several television appearances. In 2004, The Divine Messengers signed with the Quinn Records
TM label and recorded the album entitled “A Message from the Messengers.” Quinn Records TM distributed the project
both domestically and internationally. It was a huge success and remains so to this day.
The group has been nominated for many awards including the following: The Soul Train Music Awards, Excellence, Erie,
and Dove awards, the Washington Quartet Association award, were also nominated for a Grammy. Their music was
spotlighted and played on the Walt Baby Love radio station and featured for over 12 weeks.
The group has also appeared on television shows to include The Bobby Jones Show and America`s Gospel Top 20
Countdown. They have performed in several venues: GMWA Workshops, The Stone Soul Picnic, The Black Family
Reunion Celebration, The Vickie Winans Quaker Oats Festival, Constitution Hall, Lincoln Theater, Warner Theater,
Indonesian Embassy, and the New York Javits Center. They have had the esteemed honor to also perform with Albertina
Walker, The Williams Brothers, The Blind Boys, Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, The Winans, Johnnie
Taylor, BT Express, The Emotions, Dottie Peoples, Candi Staton, Jessie Dixon, Alvin Darling, The Jackson Southernaires,
The Bolton Brothers, Willie Neal Johnson, The Mighty Clouds Of Joy, The Dramatics, Greg Cooper (Jackie Wilson &
James Brown impersonator), William Devon, The Canton Spirituals, Lee Williams, Meme Red, Georgia Mass Choir,
