Hi! We are a violin/guitar duo with optional vocals, with a wide range of music from classical to jazz to bluegrass to pop. The Skirt and the Tie Provided the music for a very special event, a candlelight remembrance, hosted by the Maternal-Child Health (MCH) Department of a suburban medical center to honor and celebrate the lives of babies who did not survive outside the womb or lived only a short while after birth. From first contact with Julie and Andy, it was clear they understood the tender nature of our event and shared our team's commitment to provide a special event for families. They had wonderful suggestions for musical accompaniment and welcomed our insights, as well. We're so grateful they shared their extraordinary musical gift during such a bittersweet time. We hired the Skirt and the Tie to perform at our wedding ceremony, and we consider ourselves very fortunate to have found this duo for our event. Julie and Andy proved to be very excellent professionals, wonderful musicians, and warm individuals.
We got in contact Julie and Andy a few months before the wedding date, and they were always very responsive and supportive throughout the whole process. Our wedding was not too traditional/formal and not too large (around 60 guests) and Skirt and Tie proved to be the perfect fit. They have large playlist of jazz, classical, and some pop standards. And we some special request songs for our wedding recessional that they had no problems with playing.

We have a wide variety of repertoire, and enjoy doing some improvising. We really gauge how the crowd is taking it in, we can add percussive loops to amp up the energy, or lay back to be more ambient. We can play acoustic to a small room or with amps and mics to a large crowd. We love engaging with our audience, taking requests, and making sure that everyone is having as much fun as we are!
Julie and Andy met teaching at a music conservatory in Los Angeles. Julie studied voice and violin at Illinois Wesleyan University and in Vienna, Austria. Andy studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston. They also play together in The Oopsadaisies. Andy has toured with Kelis, Kenny Lattimore, Chante Moore, and Tamia, among others. Julie has played with Marco Antonio Solis, Solomon Burke, Alt-J, and Deltron 3030. You can also see her TedxTalk, Embracing the Uncertainty. Andy has a guitar instructional program he has developed called Guitar Focus. They love playing together, and their appreciation for each other and the music is contageous:)
