The Town Howlers play traditional bluegrass music and are influenced by the great singers and pickers from the golden era of bluegrass, such as Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Vern Williams, and Jimmy Martin. With flashy picking, tight harmony singing, and original as well as traditional songs, the Town Howlers show a deference to traditional bluegrass while also adding their own style and sound.
We hosted a pretty complicated community event that integrated the Town Howlers, guest speakers, projects for kids, interactive experiences and more... while there were a ton of moving parts, working with the Town Howlers was seamless and stress free. They dialed in the set list as we worked together on the program, and then showed up and made it happen! The were attentive to the dynamic of the event, and wove their music and their energy into every twist and turn. I heard nothing but.... I hope you are bringing them back next year! We will.....
The Town Howlers did an excellent job playing at my brother's wedding. The venue was a somewhat complicated setup but they handled the ins and out of it seamlessly and with patience, and the music was great! Would highly recommend.
When we booked The Town Howlers for our community event, we did not expect it to be as good as they were! Truly crowd engaging, many of our passer by's stopped to listen and engage with the music. They truly added to our event and we were very pleased with their
I can't say enough about this fabulous band that played for my husband's 50th! They were easy to work with, organized, but most importantly they are incredible musicians! The music was incredible and really made our party and evening come alive! They were great for both background and also as the evening progressed they were fabulous for kicking up your heals too!
The town howlers were awesome. Very professional and great musicians. Our guests loved the music and danced to their boots off. They even helped the groom serenade the bride with their first dance. Highly recommended.
These guys are great! Fabulous musicians and super easy to work with. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a bad ass bluegrass band!
The Town Howlers are beyond awesome. They played during our wedding ceremony and cocktail hour. We loved them -- though you might be wondering, are we biased? Well, nope. Because everyone was asking us who the band was and if we had their card. The Town Howlers are wonderful to work with, flexible, professional, and most of all -- great musicians. We were so thrilled that we had the chance to work with them and would recommend them for anything.

Gig Length: 45 - 500 minutes
The Town Howlers perform all over California, playing traditional bluegrass music and originals.
John McKelvy - Guitar & Vocals:
John McKelvy, originally from north central Florida, made his debut to bluegrass fans in the early 2000s as the high lonesome singer, guitarist and songwriter for the gothic bluegrass pioneers, The Earl Brothers. After leaving the band in 2007, he began focusing on old-time music with his band Black Crown Stringband ((phone number hidden)4). McKelvy has performed all over the U.S., Canada and the U.K., opening for such stars as Sam Bush, Junior Brown, Jim Lauderdale and Peter Rowan, among others.
Michael Small - Banjo & Vocals:
Michael Small developed an appreciation for American roots music as young man growing up in Maryland. When he was 16 years old, a friend left his banjo at his house and he has been playing ever since. He is also an accomplished blues and ragtime guitar picker and is particularly fond of the stylings of Reverend Gary Davis and Mississippi John Hurt. When not playing with The Town Howlers, Michael can be seen picking old time banjo or fiddle with The Darling Clementine Old Time Music Group or playing guitar in various blues and soul bands in the Bay Area.
Rowan McCallister - Mandolin & Vocals:
Growing up with his parents’ sizable collection of folk and country records, Rowan gained a serious appreciation of traditionally based music in high school, first playing guitar but soon moving on to mandolin and banjo. Rowan models his mandolin playing on the style of Bill Monroe, favoring bluesy tone and rhythm. He has been honing his craft playing in the East Bay bluegrass scene, and until its recent closing had been hosting the historic 5th String bluegrass jam in Berkeley. Rowan is available for mandolin, guitar, and clawhammer banjo lessons in the East Bay.
Matt Crimp - Fiddle & Vocals:
Born in Dillingham, Alaska, and raised in Anchorage, Matt Crimp grew up fiddling as part of the thriving Alaska folk music scene. He won the Alaska State Fair Fiddle Contest at age 13, and proceeded to record two full-length albums with his first band, The Emeralds. Matt currently resides in Berkeley, California, where he is an active performer and jammer in the acoustic music scene. From (phone number hidden)3, he performed with American Nomad, and currently plays with the Mountain Fire Band and the Town Howlers as well as solo shows.
Mike Gubman - Upright Bass:
Mike Gubman grew up playing bluegrass guitar and was quickly demoted to bass. He's been playing with Bay Area bands since 2005 and has appeared at The Great American Music Hall, Slims, Cafe Du Nord, and The Father's Day Festival.
