Tisa McDougald Schuurman has played professionally in the Atlanta area for many years in styles as varied as orchestral, wind band, musical theater and jazz-funk fusion. She has even appeared in a wedding episode of Netflix’s “Love is Blind.” In 2018, she appeared as the featured soloist on Alberto Ginastera’s Impresiones de la Puna with members of the Atlanta Community Symphony and Atlanta Symphony Orchestras at Roswell’s Fiesta Mexicana and a special performance for consulates at the Latin American Association. Mrs Schuurman reprised her role as soloist on the work with members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at a concert celebrating the International Day of the Migrant at Atlanta City Hall on December 13, 2019.
Mrs Schuurman has played with various groups around the state. Among these is the Atlanta Community Symphony Orchestra, where she has been principal flute for many years. She has also served as principal flute of the Gwinnett Symphony Wind Orchestra since its founding in 2015. Other groups she has played with include: the Cobb Wind Symphony; the Atlanta Wind Project, a chamber winds group; and the West Side Winds, a jazz orchestra based in Lithia Springs.
Despite Covid restrictions, Mrs Schuurman is pleased to have continued to perform in 2019 and 2020 by pivoting to chamber works and using protocols such as outdoor rehearsals and concerts, and social distancing. In addition to performing, Mrs Schuurman is a lessons teacher with a growing in-person and online studio, and a busy clinician at middle schools and high schools in Northwest Georgia.
