I’m a Navy Veteran and served on the destroyer USS The Sullivans DD-537 in 1964. The Sullivans was named for the Five Sullivan Brothers killed in action aboard the USS Juneau during the Battle of Guadalcanal. The helmsman of The Sullivans during WWII was George “The Kissing Sailor” Mendonsa, who was the Sailor in Alfred Eisenstaedt's iconic Life Magazine V-J Day photo of the sailor kissing the nurse in NYC Times Square. I had the honor of visiting with George over 8 years before he passed away in 2019.
