Cellist Hannah Scarborough is a versatile musician with a deep affinity for orchestral playing, teaching, and various forms of chamber music. She is a teaching assistant to Steven Doane and Rosemary Elliot at the Eastman School of Music, where she is pursuing a Masters of Music in Cello Performance and Literature.
Hannah studied with Peter Stumpf from (phone number hidden)1, earning her Bachelors of Music at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2020 and her Performance Diploma in 2021 as the recipient of the Premier Young Artist Award and Janos Starker Memorial Scholarship. While at IU, she studied Baroque and Classical cello with Joanna Blendulf. Hannah was principal cello of IU’s Philharmonic Orchestra in 2019, performing Wagner’s prolific opera, Parsifal, among other notable concerts.
Hannah has been a substitute cellist with the New World Symphony as of April 2022. She was a 2020 fellow with the Colorado College Summer Music Festival, attended the Academie Domaine Forget in 2019, and sat first desk of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, with which she performed in the Berlin Philharmonie and Amsterdam Concertgebouw on their 2015 European tour. She held section cello positions in the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra cello sections from (phone number hidden)0.
As a chamber musician, Hannah has played in masterclasses for the Emerson Quartet and Alexander Quartet, studied with the Pacifica Quartet, performed as a part of the Wylie House concert series in 2019, and was a member of the award-winning Trio Volare with the San-Francisco-based program Young Chamber Musicians. She was a recipient of the Pleasanton Cultural Arts Council’s Youth Excellence in Arts award and was a winner in the Etude Club of Berkeley’s Young Artist Competition.
Hannah most recently performed alongside IU Professors Stephen Wryzenski and Marietta Simpson in a quartet for voice, flute, viola and cello by Anthony Green. An enthusiastic collaborator, she enjoys organizing and directing her own chamber music concerts and benefit concerts, which span a wide range of musical genres. She currently resides in Rochester, New York, where she teaches at the Eastman Community Music School, embarks on cooking experiments, and writes about all of the above.
