H. 4REAL: MUSIC CARRER STORY
H. 4REAL literally keeps it real in his music and in his daily life. Not one to mice words, his socially-charged lyrics make that powerful impact whenever they are heard. In an era where most music we hear is all about partying and dancing, it’s refreshing to hear someone come out with positive massages that serves as eye-openers to the masses. H. 4REAL is not afraid to speak his mind, until his voice is heard around the globe. Let’s get familiar.
How did you begin your career in music?
H. 4REAL: I started my music career whiles I was in the first year of my senior high school. I had a brother who I worked with during my holidays as a Baber in his barbering salon. One day he bought a photo calendar with many celebrities, among which was SISQO an American singer who inspired me by his looks to begin acting, singing and performing like him. Throughout my home town I was noted for my best performance, because I could sing and dance just like him. During this same time i began writing my own songs as well, until my third year in 2001 when I was voted as the entertainment prefect of my school (Nalerigu Senior high) because of my exclusive performance. After high school I started recording my written songs whiles in Teacher training college at Tamale (BATCO) and continue music throughout my education to Ghana Telecom University, MDPI Oil and Gas Training, University of Ghana (Legon) and currently at Van Hall University of Applied Science in Holland. I have not look back since, I’ve just kept my eyes to the future.
How would you describe your type of music?
H. 4REAL: I describe my music as the New Afro Beat, combining African rhythm with other rhythms across the globe giving my fans a wide range of Varity from Afro-pop, dance Hall, hip pop and urban street style. I try not to get myself pigeon-holed into one category. I believe in being free to experiment, and trying new things to create a sound that is as unique as possible.
What are some of the challenges you go through in your career?
H. 4REAL: I go through some challenges as an individual such as getting access to certain public structures to enable me tell a comprehensive story in my music videos, but the general challenge for me and most Ghanaian musicians is promotion, that is getting the good work done known to the public through media (paying payola). It’s something that is really frustrating the artistes who are coming up. Most artist don’t start their career in with investor or capital. What little money we have is put into studio fees and paying for beats. So now after all that, we need to find money to get our music played on air. You need a small fortune to get your music out there these days. Also, the issue of pirating is a challenge. Another big challenge for me and 99percent of musician in Ghana is the Leadership of Ghana Musician union. They are dormant, non-innovative, non-creative. They are not doing enough to help push the industry forward, leading to stagnation with very little or no progress. This major challenges can kill creativity in Ghanaian youth making them less productive.
What do you normally talk in your Music?
H. 4REAL: In my music, I talk about social issues such as peaceful coexistence, love/hate, life straggles, success, happiness, social warning/ awareness and anything relating to human existence and interaction. No subject matter is off the table in my music. It’s important for us as musicians to spread socially conscious messages in our music. Yeah, it’s good to dance and have fun, but we must be ready to open the eyes of our listeners, and empower them. It’s our social responsibility.
What do like most about what you do?
H. 4REAL: What I like most for being in music is the fact that I entertain and put happiness and joy in people’s lives every day. I also like the fact that it gives me the loud voice to talk and correct certain social problems. Last but not the least, I love the fact that it generates income for me and large number of people in the music business. Music puts food on the table for so many people. This accolades make me enjoy my work.
What are music achievement so far?
H. 4REAL:My music achieved international recognition for getting the fourth position in the free critique of an American base and the world leading independent artist and repertoire company call Taxi. I have previously released three songs one HIV Aids awareness which was adopted by Ghana aids commission in 2007, and one song to promote Ghana jubilee oil field and was adopted by ministry of Energy in 2010 and a peace song to promote peace during the 2016 election campaigns.
What are you working on at the moment?
H. 4REAL: I am currently working on two projects, one is nationwide tour to educate senior high schools students on scholarship application procedures and personal hygiene. And also working on a video to promote peace and coexistence between blacks and white in America and around the globe. I am working to push Ghanaian music and culture to the international front in the near future with the new African talent. I want to bring transformation to the Ghanaian music industry and boost creativity for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
What advice would you give to upcoming artists reading this?
H. 4REAL: The advice I am giving to young artist is that, they should keep their dreams and work to achieve them because a quitter cannot be a winner and winner cannot be a quitter, so never quite your dreams. Even our current president tried several times before he became. Keep the fire blazing!!!
