Originally from Hawaii, flutist Patricia Cardona began her studies at the Punahou School in Honolulu with flutist Sabrina Saiki-Meta and finished her high school studies with flutist and pedagog Sandy Duffy Norman of Sunridge Flute Studios in Salem, OR. From (phone number hidden)8 she was a frequent competitor at the Oregon Music Association Solo and Ensemble at the state level, winning First Prize in 2005 and Second Prize in 2006 and, in 2007, was awarded First place in the Connie Fritz Memorial Concerto Competition. Patricia was a member of the National Honor Society, was awarded the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement, the Presidential Bronze Cross for Volunteerism, the National Sojourners Award, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and was the recipient of the John Phillip Sousa Award. In 2008, she received the National Arts in Action, Live on Stage scholarship. Patricia has participated in masterclasses with flutists Mary Karen Clardy, Lorna McGhee, Jill Felber, Nancy Andrews, Bonita Boyd, Carol Wincenc, Emmanuel Pahud and more.
Patricia completed her B.M. in flute performance at the University of Oregon studying with the Grammy Award-winning Molly Barth. While attending the University of Oregon Patricia competed at the MTNA state and national levels and held first and second chair positions in the University of Oregon Wind Ensemble and Symphony. Before graduating she was twice awarded the University Award for Arts and Advocacy. She then completed her master’s degree in New York City as a student of Artist Faculty Robert Dick at NYU Steinhardt in the spring of 2015 where she held adjunct faculty status teaching undergraduate flutists. Patricia was awarded the Graduate Award for Excellence and Achievement from NYU in 2015 and continued her studies at NYU Paris in the spring of 2016. Patricia has been a member of the NYU Symphony, NYU Contemporary Ensemble, the NYU New Music Ensemble, and is combining her passion for feminism and flute performance in her project Queerflöte.
During her studies Patricia has attended the Northwest Flute and Piccolo Forum in Seattle, WA, the Imani Winds Festival in NYC, Domaine Forget in northern Quebec, and the soundSCAPE Music Festival in Maccagno, Italy. In the summer of 2011 she studied flute in Vienna, Austria with flutist Ulrike Anton. In the Spring of 2016 while attending NYU Paris, Patricia studied electronic music composition at IRCAM and flute performance at the École Normale de Musique de Paris with Patricia Nagle.
Patricia lives in Brooklyn where she performs her music, freelances, and teaches. She is currently working on computer-aided compositions for her recital project QUEERFLOETE and interviewing LGBTQ and POC musicians for her podcast of the same title.
