Detroit's Motown sound - the soulful melodies, harmonic vocals and painful yet playful lyrics about love, happiness and romantic heartbreak - idealized the city and an era. The "Paris of the Midwest" is where you should be for music to fall in love by. And here is where the four young men of the 'Dynamics' would enhance the industry they loved so well and carve out their own piece of musical history.
The Dynamics, formerly known as the Monarchs, one day spotted General Motors new Oldsmobile 'Dynamic 88, perhaps their dream car of 1958. And the Dynamics legacy was born. Born with a name that embodied Detroit to its fullest extent. Backed by their band,The Royal Playboys, and under the management of first Anthony Wilson and then Dave Fox, the Dynamics were on the ladder towards the top. It was during this time that Samuel Stephenson left the group to follow a higher calling and Ernest Fudge stepped in to fill the gap. Misery, Ice Cream Song, What A Shame, She's For Real, Voyage Thru The MInd, I'm Thinkin' We Found Love were all songs that propelled the Dynamics into the midst of the greatest music acts over a period of nearly fifty years. I, as a writer, am grateful for the privilege of being front row to see some of the best performances ever seen, done by the Dynamics, Besides prayer at the beginning of each show, was a saying the Dynamics have just before curtain time. If other acts were on the show they'd always say, "lets take 'em to school". Thinking there was a short explanation I asked one day what it meant. I learned to only ask that question if you had a fair amount of time to hear the answer. These boys who became men before my eyes, are more than passionate about their craft. No short-cuts. I am surprised that the Dynamics never reached the very top, but I don't think they'll have that problem this time. The Apollo Theater
