The Far Field is a 3 person acoustic folk/rock band performing mostly original material. Their sound is reminiscent of the revival-folk of the 60’s full of jangly guitars and wheezing harmonicas. Accordion and flute add elements that are at once ethereal and carnival-like. These sounds form a rusty fence that encloses a core of tight vocal harmonies.

The Far Field is a brand new, folk music band consisting of 4 experienced musicians sneaking in through the backdoor of Tacoma’s local music scene. Their clear, organic sound has crept below the radar of the music police but continues to generate a buzz among aficionados of the genre.
The Far Field began during the summer of 2014 when singer/songwriter Jon Borcherding found fellow Far Fielders through an online personal ad. “It was an interesting process, he recalls, I think I auditioned at least one escapee from a mental institution.”
The process took several months and led to the close, vocal partnership that formed between Borcherding and female vocalist, Kari Tally. Keys player, Ted LeCompte brought a sense of drama with his musical theatre experience and the band was complete when John Tubbs added the melodic thump of his steady bass.
Their sound is reminiscent of the revival-folk of the 60’s full of jangly guitars and wheezing harmonicas. Accordion and flute add elements that are at once ethereal and carnival-like. These sounds form a rusty fence that encloses a core of tight vocal harmonies. One audience member quipped that The Far Field’s sound is like “Gordon Lightfoot meets Pink Floyd.”
Although they have no immediate plans to tour, The Far Field hopes to reach as many ears as possible in the local music scene over the next few months. Their list of catchy, original tunes is growing very quickly and an extensive recording session is almost inevitable. The band is a bit reticent about announcing album plans, but they all agree that something will be forthcoming by the end of 2015.
Jon Borcherding says, “At this point we’re very much focused on songwriting and getting our sound dialed in. When someone tells me that a particular song made them reminiscent or happy or sad, I know we’ve achieved what we set out to do: We’ve managed to reach one more person. That’s all that really matters.”
