3-Chord Petty was born out of a passion for music not surprising since I started performing in elementary school, then high school, college and finally professionally in Los Angeles during the height of the "LA Sound" that included the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, CSN, Jackson Browne, etc. Using the latest technology, I create studio quality audio backtracking combined with live performance to deliver an interactive presentation and flexibility for most occasions such as. weddings, parties, company events, and yes even wakes! For instruments I dont play I send the audio files to professional musicians who record their part, send them back to my studio where vocals are overlaid.

As someone who has toured the country playing in a multitude of venues I recognized the importance of augmenting the location and event and not dominate what is going on. So if playing a wedding for example, I concentrated on complimenting the couple's special day and help make them the center of the show. On occasions a bride, groom or guest will ask to sing along or solo and I try to accommodate this within limits as long they can actually carry a tune and know the words to the song, and well. Not being intoxicated is a bonus!
Since I focus on classic pop music from the 1960-90s, I play a wide variety of songs from the Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, Stings, Brooks and Dunn, Big and Rich, Tom Petty, Sting, Elvis Costello, Buddy Holly, Kinks, etc. On occasion I have guests musicians "sit in" at no extra charge which adds a new element of spontaneity, excitement and performance to the show.
Most important, the audience is the main focus and I appreciate those who have hired me and respect their time and efforts.
Here are my personal and professional performing standards.
* I show up prepared, AND early (not just on time. Yep, its a German thing).
* I arrive ready to hit the stage, play hard, work the audience and provide a great show.
* My smartphone stays off the entire show even on breaks (you'd be surprised)
* I don't drink before during or after the show except for water and other non-alcoholic beverages
* I dress accordingly and professionally i.e. dress shirt, slacks, coat, etc.
* I like to visit the venue 1-2 days prior to the engagement to avoid surprises.
* I take a 15-20 minute break between sets to mingle or answer question and rehydrate.
* I provide a extra off stage microphone for guests announcements.
* NO ONE is allowed on stage at ANY time, for ANY reason or touches ANY equipment.
Dr. Thom (Ph.D. not MD) is a passionate solo artist who brings the timeless classics of the 70s, 80s, and 90s to life with a fresh twist. With a love for iconic hits from legendary artists, he skillfully reinterprets classic songs, blending nostalgia with a distinctive sound.
Born in Long Beach California, Doc grew up surrounded by the vibrant music of those decades where developed a deep appreciation for the lyrical storytelling and melodic richness that characterized the era's greatest hits. From the soulful rhythms of the 70s to the electrifying anthems of the 80s to the remarkable ballads of the 90s, Doc captures the essence of these songs in his performances.
Doc started out like many musicians in the 4th grade choir and orchestra then continued this journey through college as a 1st tenor in classic vocal assembles, jazz vocal groups and cover bands working the LA music scene in the 1970-80s. Meanwhile, Doc completed degrees in performing arts, including an MBA in statistics and PhD in organizational development. As a classically trained vocalist Doc studied voice with Doug Strawn who toured with the Carpenters and continued to perform at Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm and consult with several of the leading LA studios including The Record Plant and Paramount Studios.
Whether performing at small venues, clubs, or private events, Three Chord Petty (as Doc calls himself) engages audiences with warm renditions, inviting them to reminisce or sing along. With a commitment to honoring the original artists while also instilling his own artistry, Doc creates a truly memorable experience that resonates across generations.
People ask Doc how he recreates that classic Phil Spector Wall of Sound when performing and mentions that having built two recording studios from scratch, he uses backing tracks for major instruments he doesn’t play i.e. bagpipes and piano, then engineers theses tracks using a digital audio workstation (DAW) into a blended sound maintaining the classic feel of the original songs, but with a new interpretation.
I have my own PA systems and pretty much all of the equipment I need to be a solo performer, but a venue with lighting is alway helpful. All my equipment is insured against loss or damage but then again, some people do get carried away by the excitement of the event. Just saying.
If possible, I like to visit the venue, see photographs or call the venue manager in advance just to make sure everything is in working order just incase the room is not conducive to a live show. Not all venues work well with power cables running across a rooms, so I tape those down just to be safe.
